Election Credibility Question in Nigeria: The Impact of BimodalVoter Accreditation System and Media Representation in 2023General Election

Abstract

Electoral malpractices have long posed serious challenges to the credibility of elections in Nigeria, prompting stakeholders to seek reforms aimed at improving transparency and public confidence in the electoral process. This study examines the role of electoral technology and media coverage in enhancing election credibility in Nigeria, with particular reference to a gubernatorial election in Kwara State. Adopting a qualitative research approach, the study employed descriptive analysis and conducted interviews with twelve key informants drawn from the three senatorial districts. The findings reveal that the deployment of electoral technologies, when combined with effective media representation, significantly strengthened voter confidence, reduced irregularities, and improved public trust in electoral outcomes. The study concludes that the credibility of elections depends not only on institutional reforms but also on strategic collaboration between electoral authorities and the media. It recommends continuous technological improvement and sustained media engagement to reinforce democratic accountability and electoral integrity.
